If you want to explore the city but don't want to fork out for a formal tour, then simply look to the tram system. There are three tram routes that will give you a sense of Budapest's sights and it's also a great way to get your bearings without wearing down the shoe leather. A convenient tram spot is at the Pest-side of Margaret Bridge; here, you can take the number 4 or 6 tram, which both do a circuit through Pest, taking in many of the key areas, such as Oktogon and Blaha Lujza tér ('tér' means 'square'), before crossing Liberty Bridge (Szabadsád híd) and passing into Buda at the famous Gellért hotel. The number 2 tram, which can also be picked up at this point, runs down the Pest-side of the Danube, affording great views of Buda.
